A new client sent us an enquiry through our website asking for several oval nameplates in 3mm stainless steel. Nameplates are one of our most popular products as they are used across a vast array of industries and workplaces. They are a durable and long-lasting method of identification and are also cost-effective.
As a material that is known for its resistance to corrosion and ability to withstand direct sunlight, these stainless steel plates should have been a perfect match for the yacht he wanted to put them on.
Starting production
Naturally, once we received his enquiry, we quoted it up and got to work. We ran the order, produced the plates and sent them off to the customer as soon as they were finished. Job well done on our end – or so we thought.
However, not long afterwards, we got a call from the customer who explained that he was unable to bend them around the mast where he intended to fix the nameplates.
Superhuman strength
The issue was that the 3mm stainless steel he had chosen was far too thick to be bent in this way. In fact, we did the math on this one and found out that it would take approximately 150 tons of weight to successfully bend it round!
Once we clarified with the customer exactly what he needed the products for, we were able to reproduce the nameplates in a thinner gauge of stainless steel so that he could easily bend and fix them however he wanted.

If the customer had simply rung us ahead of time before placing his order and explained to us exactly what he would be using his nameplates for, then we would have been able to suggest a gauge of 0.5mm or 0.75mm from the outset. This would have saved him the inconvenience and delay of having to re-clarify his order and wait for new nameplates to be produced.
