Our waymarkers have been providing clear instructions and directions for those enjoying footpaths and bridleways around the UK for over 25 years.
County Councils regularly need roundel labels to provide orientation and directions for the public. Most waymarkers have a white background of surface-printed polystyrene material, with a short stream graphic print on the surface.
They are then precisely cut into three-inch diameter discs to fit onto a standard 4-inch diameter wooden post. These are the exact type of waymarkers we produced for one particular County Council, who rang up a short while later to report a problem.
Waymarkers turning white?
The issue was that some of the waymarker discs were turning white, and no one could figure out why. The County Council had done some investigation, but there was nothing obvious that they could find.
They got in contact with us wondering if we had ever experienced this problem with our products before – and of course, we hadn’t.
At Inform Products, we put our heads together to try and figure out the cause of the waymarkers turning white. One of the most logical solutions was that the UV in bright sunlight was bleaching the print, but this could not have been the case in the short matter of weeks the waymarkers had been installed.
Collectively, we were stumped. A few days later, however, we received an interesting call from the County Council, which cleared everything up for all of us.
The answer? Cows.
One of the wardens out on his rounds had noticed a cow licking the waymarker on one of the posts. He didn’t know whether they were attracted by the colour of the design or whether our waymarkers had a particularly attractive flavour, but the cows’ rough tongues were literally licking the small discs clean.
The solution
After making sure that no harm was done to the cows, we had a good chuckle at Inform Products and then got down to finding a solution.
This turned out to be replicating the affected waymarkers in a sub-surface or “under printed” polycarbonate. Unlike surface printing, these waymarkers had an upper layer protecting the print so that it cannot be rubbed or licked off.
It’s never a bad thing to expect the unexpected, and here at Inform Products, sometimes even we’re surprised at the situations our products find themselves in.
But no matter the circumstances – even if they involve hungry livestock – we’re happy to brainstorm a solution to fit your organisation’s individual needs.
We pride ourselves on our after-sales experience, so don’t hesitate to get in touch if there is a problem with the product you receive. We want you to be as happy as possible with whatever you order and will do everything possible to solve the problem to everybody’s satisfaction.
